My experiences at Crestfield Camp, Pittsburgh in 2002

On the left, was time for canoeing. And on the right, I stood with three American youths in front of our wood cabin. My CCAP. Blantyre Synod has partnership with Pittsburgh Presbytery of the PC(USA), and Pittsburgh Presbytery used to invite youths from Blantyre Synod to participate in two-months of summer camping at Crestfield Camp.

Thanks Jason Smith for supplies to Sawali Village

Our dear brothers amd sisters,

Our daughter Patricia has informed us that the needy amongst the community of Sawali Village divided amongst themselves the supplies that Jason Smith bought and left behind. The supplies comprize clothes, rice and beans. It was all smiles on the faces of the villagers as they received the supplies which came as a surprise to them.

My wife and I extend our thanks and blessings to Jason Smith for the timely assistance (that has come from the little he has) he has given Sawali Village. Right now, Malawi as a whole is experiencing the greatest famine in history, and our Sawali village is no exception. The most affected in this great famine are women and children. Most of these Sawali people receiving this assistance survive on piece-works they are able to do for those of their people in jobs like me and wife. For example, my wife and I had to send some money home (to our daughter) for hiring people to work in our garden. Besides famine, most of our people in Malawi cannot afford to buy the expensive fertilizer. This is so because out of the eleven (11) million people in Malawi, only about one (1) million people have jobs. Even if the rains were to fall fairly, still, a great majority would harvest very little to take them to the following harvest.

Braai at Ulli and Heide's place was a success!

First, there were more people than we had expected, and secondly there was enough food for everyone, and even more to point of having seconds. You mention it, braai'red sausages, braai'red chicken, pasta, potatoes, crisps, drinks, etc. Thanks to Maggie who had come to collect me and my wife had told us not to leave our grandkids at home.

The occasion was very international. I could hear a number of different languages being spoken because there were those of our friends from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Gabon, South Africa and us from Malawi.

Ulli at one point read from Phillipians 2 - which talks about Jesus Christ stripping off himself of the heavenly glory and coming to live amongst us. Then he reminded us how sometimes we cling on to earthly treasures at the expense of the eternal treasures God has for us after this world. Ulli shared with us his family's experiences of the recent robbery at their house, in which a number of their things were taken away from the house - television set, DVD, camera, etc. In such an experience, Ulli said, as he had told his wife and children, that he was very happy and thankful for God's safety and protection of their lives, because anything could have happened to them. And Ulli put forward the following question: Why did Jesus come down to us? Jesus Christ came down to save us/die for us, and rose up - giving hope for those of us who believe in him/we will live with him in his father's glory. On the wall of the house of Ulli and Heide, there we saw a cloth on which was an image of Jesus carrying the cross, and written on it were the words: "Born to die". Pointing to those words, Ulli explained that Jesus' work did not just end at his death, but that resurrection from the dead followed, and went to heaven where he sits on the right hand of God. Thereafter, Ulli explained to us the importance of the coming Christmas season.
